Baltimore Museum of Art Exhibits a Circus of Artwork

Baltimore Museum of Art Exhibits a Circus of Artwork

One could hardly ask for a more colorful subject for artwork than the circus. Exotic animals, colorful clowns, tumbling acrobats, bold daredevils, and the great, gaudy colors of the circus environment combine to make an art student’s paradise.

The Baltimore Museum of Art’s exhibit, which runs from February to May 2009, features circus-themed artwork from famous European names including Pablo Picasso, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Fernand Lége, Jules Chéret, Gino Severini, and Natalia Goncharova, to name just a few. This exhibit comes together in a wild, free-spirited show of color and form, nearly as dazzling to behold as the circus show itself!

You also learn a lot of history about the circus from the exhibit. For instance, 19th and 20th century France had laws to the effect that only theater performers could have spoken dialog. And so, circus performers, not allowed to have scripted lines, employed slapstick, buffoonery, and mimicry to perform while circumventing the law, while the orchestra in the background gave musical cues to fill in the story. This gave rise to the art of pantomime!

The many canvas prints and watercolors are accompanied by hand-on exhibits, including a puzzle book that lets visitors create their own Picasso-like creations, a photo opportunity where you can dress up as a performer yourself and pose for photo gifts, and several lectures and panel discussions with actual circus performers.

Circuses are an intriguing piece of history, largely forgotten about today with all of our electronic entertainments. It’s not like you can take a circus home on DVD. And most especially, you can only have a connection to the lives and careers of the circus world through exhibits like these.

Finding A Place In The Art World

Finding A Place In The Art World

The field of fine arts is a crowded one, filled with thousands of would-be artists and struggling professionals. Instead of joining the rat race, today’s artist needs to find a way to stand apart. The best way to do this is to find and take advantage of a niche market. Yes, the golden rule of the entrepreneur applies to artists as well.

A great example of this is Justin Reed, a Vermont man who has garnered a reputation for his movie themed paintings. The cinema has always been very popular with young men, and Justin Reed is enjoying much success developing this niche, with waiting lists extending a year in advance.

If you are interested in a particular genre, for instance, landscape painting, try narrowing it down to a particular theme, like farm life, and then even further, to paintings of cows. You may think that having a more widely appealing portfolio is better, but consider, unless you possess extraordinary talent, what is there to differentiate you from all of the other professional artists out there? The point is to have a specialty. Once you develop your niche and become known for it, you should be able to carve out a place in the artistic community. Then it will be time to carefully expand your market.
