What exactly is giclee printing? The term giclee (to be uttered as gee’ clay) has its origin in French which means “to spray” or “squirt” which is exactly the way an inkjet printer functions. But, giclee printer is not the same as any normal inkjet printer and happens to be much bigger. Did you know that they are a little more than meter in breadth and are popularly referred to as “knitting machine” on account of their size and similarity in appearance?
In giclee printing, there is no screen or any other mechanical tool employed and hence there is no obvious dot screen design that can be seen. The image looks very close to the original painting in shade and tone. If giclee prints are kept away from the glare of the sun, they last for years and years. They make lovely photo gifts too.
Giclee prints can be had on any kind of paper as per the desire of the customer, but they look best on canvas. Since people normally prefer to have the reproduction of original paintings on canvas, giclee prints are also preferred on canvas so that they look as close as the original painting, not only in color, but also in texture and quality of the material. Giclee canvas prints as mentioned earlier are any day more durable than paper as they do not crease when rolled.
