The Art of Giclee Printing: Photos on Canvas
Giclee printing is a special form of art whereby photos are transferred onto canvas or another medium via advancements in printmaking technology. In a Gliclee print, the object or piece of artwork of interest is rendered as a high-resolution digital image. Then, long-lasting colored ink is used to reproduce the digitized image through a specialized printing process that can be applied to canvas, paper, and other art media of interest. It has been suggested that giclee printing yields longer life and higher fidelity color reproduction than other printing or archiving techniques.
Recently, a collection of giclee prints by an artist has been the inspiration of an artistic collaboration of another sort. The late giclee printer Genevieve (“Gen”) Monacelli was born in 1924 and worked at various jobs through her life, including as a canner, as an employee in the restaurant of her parents, as a government employee, a volunteer, and finally a mother. Unbeknownst to many, she also was an accomplished giclee printing artist in private until her death in 1997.
Her dramatist son, Patrick Riviere, inspired by and wanting to pay homage to his mother, entered into a collaboration with a former high school classmate, Laird Ogden, another dramatist in Ohio to stage a play that will launch the public display of his mother’s collection, beginning with five signed and numbered pieces that he hand-picked for an additional run and to be succeeded by a second limited edition printing before a larger scale printing is undertaken. This work follows upon a book of his mother’s work that Patrick completed with assistance from former high school theater instructor, Ms. Kate Konsigisor, to help the public appreciate the giclee prints by his mother.
